Books

My book writing days are over. I've "retired." Previously, from 1993 to 2009, I authored the following books:

Sad Macs, Bombs and Other Disasters. In 1993, the first edition of Sad Macs, Bombs and Other Disasters was published by Addison-Wesley. By the third edition, the publisher had shifted to Peachpit Press. The fourth and final edition was published in 2000.

At almost 1000 pages, Sad Macs was the definitive troubleshooting guide for the Macintosh before Mac OS X. For a time, it was the number-one best-selling Macintosh book in the United States.

Here's a small sample of quotes from reviews of the book: MacAddict magazine called it "the best book on and definitive guide to Mac troubleshooting." BMUG said it was "the best book for finding out what is wrong with your Mac and dealing with it. Computer Shopper called Sad Macs "an indispensable reference for any Mac user." Mac Home Journal wrote that "Sad Macs "details just about every Mac problem you could possibly think of. Impressively, Ted Landau wrote the book so that anyone can understand it."

Mac OS X Disaster Relief. Mac OS X Disaster Relief, written with Dan Frakes, was published in June of 2002 (also by Peachpit). As its name implies, it just covered Mac OS X. It was essentially an early version (for Mac OS X 10.0 and 10.1) of my next book, Mac OS X Help Line. A review for MacEase stated: "This book is the best single source of OS X troubleshooting tips and techniques that I've seen!"

HelpLine Tiger Cover

Mac OS X Help Line. This was my third and final Mac troubleshooting book. The first edition of Mac OS X Help Line arrived in 2004. The final edition (2006) covered Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. Weighing in at almost 1200 pages, it was (and probably still is) the most complete troubleshooting guide for Mac OS X ever published. Even though a good part of it is now out-of-date, I still refer to it for background information from time to time.

Here are two quotes from reviews: "There are plenty of reference manuals for Mac OS X, but none of them come close to Mac OS X Help Line." "Every Mac owner should have a copy of this book - it is a must! I can't think of any book that comes close to this book. It truly is in a league of its own."

iPhone-3-Cover 160x136

Take Control of iPhone OS 3. This was the title of the third, and final (2009), edition of my ebook about the iPhone, published as part of Adam and Tonya Engst's Take Control series. Although the emphasis (no surprise) of Take Control of iPhone OS was on troubleshooting and "under-the-hood" features, it was also intended as a general introduction to the new device and iOS.
